چکیده

In this paper we review recent developments in scattering theory related to applications involving polarised electromagnetic waves. We concentrate on applications in random media where second and higher order moments of the scattered field are important. We split the discussion into surface and volume scattering effects and consider each separately. However, we employ a unified approach based on the construction of an 8x8 scattering coherency matrix, encompassiing current applications in Polarimetry and Polarimetric Interferometry. We then use this matrix as a template to explore the limitations of currently used scattering theories and highlight areas for possible future study.

Physical Optics Calculation of Electromagnetic Scattering From Haack Series Nose Cone

In this paper, the physical optics method is used to study the problem of electromagnetic scattering from Haack series nose cone. First, a meshing scheme is introduced which approximates the curvature of the surface by piecewise linear functions in both axial and rotational directions. This results in planar quadrilateral patches and enables efficient determination of the illuminated region and...

Spectral Effects of the Vacuum Resonance in Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters

The association of all three soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) with supernova remnants has established that SGRs are young neutron stars, and has given us a starting point for detailed modeling. One of the most popular classes of models involves strongly magnetised neutron stars, with surface dipole fields B ∼ 10 − 10 G. In such strong magnetic fields, many otherwise negligible processes can play...

Computation of Light Scattering in Young Stellar Objects

A Monte Carlo light scattering code incorporating aligned non-spherical particles is described. The major effects on the flux distribution, linear polarisation and circular polarisation are presented, with emphasis on the application to Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). The need for models with non-spherical particles in order to successfully model polarisation data is reviewed. The ability of this...

Spin Polarisation of Electrons Scattered Superelastically by Laser-excited Na Atoms

We have measured the spin polarisation of electrons scattered superelastically from laser-excited Na atoms at a collision energy of 20 eV and a scattering angle of 30’. The measured spin polarisation is 0.095 zt0.048 for scattering from the 3p zPl/z excited state of Na. The polarisation changes sign if the laser is tuned to the 3p 2P3,z state, as is expected on formal grounds. We also present c...
